Tuscaloosa, Ala. --Fifth grade students from Tuscaloosa County Schools will enjoy an outdoor classroom next week as the 12th annual Forestry Awareness Week Now (FAWN) program gets underway at Camp Horne October 19-22.
The FAWN workshop is an environmental education program taught by local natural resource professionals. Tuscaloosa County’s program is one of the largest programs in Alabama and is made possible through the cooperation of Alabama Forests Forever, The Black Warrior Chapter of the Society of American Foresters, The Westervelt Company, and the Tuscaloosa County Forestry Planning Committee. Volunteers from Shelton State Community College and Holt High School will also help facilitate the event.
Over 800 students and teachers will walk the trails of Camp Horne with stops at learning centers on wildlife management, forest history, tree identification, forest products, fire management and other natural resource concerns.
“Alabama’s forests are a valuable natural resource for the state, and it is the decisions made by future generations which will determine their long-term health” said Richard Ahlquist, a forester for The Westervelt Company and chairman of the 2009 program. “The FAWN program seeks to educate and inform young people about the history and future of sustainable forest management in our rapidly changing world.”
Students will be at Camp Horn from 8:30 a.m. - noon. The media is invited to visit any session.
