  • 05/06/12: Greene County is location for company turning wood chips into fuel (Westervelt Renewable Energy)
    Tuscaloosa-based Westervelt Co. is building a plant in Aliceville in Pickens County that will make wood pellets that will be exported to Europe, where they will be burned at electrical utility plants. And at Westervelt's Moundville sawmill in Hale County, turbines were added last year to produce electricity that is generated from the burning of sawdust and waste wood used to heat the plant's wood-drying kilns. The turbines produce enough electricity to supply the power needs of 3,000 homes a year. Alabama Power Co. has teamed up with Westervelt on that project. (The Tuscaloosa News)
  • 02/28/12: Building a Bank Takes More Than Just Snakes (Westervelt Ecological Services)
    In an area surrounded by rice fields and flanked by the Sutter bypass, there is a small but fertile area filled with water and plant life, but there are no crops growing here. This land has become a home dedicated to the giant garter snake. The spot in question is the 429-acre Sutter Basin Conservation Bank, created by Westervelt Ecological Services in 2008, and according to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Biologist Dwight Harvey, "this bank has become one of the best examples of created habitat for the giant garter snake in the Sacramento Valley."   • 01/24/12: Westervelt Ecological Services Conservation Bank Receives Approval from California Department of Fish and Game (Westervelt Ecological Services)
    The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has approved the Sutter Basin Conservation Bank in Sutter County California. The bank, owned and managed by Westervelt Ecological Services, preserves and protects over 429 acres of managed marsh and associated upland habitats for the benefit of the Giant Garter Snake (Thamnophis gigas), an endangered and threatened species.

    The November 23, 2011 award of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for its nearly 500,000 acres of forests in central Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia, further demonstrates The Westervelt Company's commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, the company has earned FSC Chain of Custody Certification, which allows it to label products manufactured at Westervelt Lumber in Moundville, Ala.

    The Sacramento Tree Foundation recognized Westervelt Ecological Services as this year's Legacy Award winner for an Inspirational Oak Grove. Presented at the annual Tree Hero Awards Dinner, the award honors a tree, landscape or woodland and recognizes the innate worthiness of a specific tree or landscape, as well as the beauty and value of these living entities.
  • 05/09/11: ALICEVILLE SELECTED FOR FUEL PELLET PRODUCTION FACILITY (Westervelt Renewable Energy)
    Approximately 104 acres on Highway 17 near Aliceville, Alabama, has been selected as the site for a commercial-scale wood fuel pellet production facility. As announced earlier this year, Westervelt Renewable Energy, LLC, will produce pellets from Southern Yellow Pine material for export and domestic markets.

    Having received notification from the Warner Foundation of its intent to terminate the lease of the Anchorage Building at NorthRiver® – current home of the Westervelt-Warner Museum of Art – on June 20, 2011, The Westervelt Company's board of directors met this morning and decided the company will continue displaying its art collection, comprised mostly of works created by American artists, at its current location, and will begin a process to reestablish a permanent display at its corporate headquarters on Jack Warner Parkway.

    A decision made during the November, 2010, meeting of its Board of Directors to deaccession art from its private collection in 2011 is currently being implemented. This process includes sales of some key pieces of its 2200 items through both private agents and public auctions.
